Game Description:

Gobble is a fast-paced, word-based game where players take turns creating words from a shared pool of letters. The goal is to be the first player to use up all their letters while preventing your opponent from doing the same. With its simple yet strategic gameplay, Gobble is perfect for word game enthusiasts and families alike.

How to Play:

  1. Gather 2-4 players and agree on a starting player.
  2. Shuffle the letter deck and deal 7 letters to each player. Place the remaining letters in a draw pile.
  3. The starting player draws a letter from the draw pile and creates a word using at least one of their existing letters.
  4. The word must be at least 3 letters long, but there is no maximum length.
  5. The next player to the left must then create a word using at least one of the letters already played, including the starting player’s word.
  6. Players continue taking turns creating words, drawing letters as needed, and trying to use up all their letters before their opponents.
  7. If a player cannot think of a word, they must pass their turn.
  8. The game ends when one player has used up all their letters. That player scores points for the words they created during the game.
  9. The game can be played with a time limit to add an extra layer of challenge and excitement.

Full Details:

Letter Deck:

  • The letter deck consists of 100 letters, including all 26 letters of the alphabet, as well as 10 special “Gobble” letters (G, O, B, B, L, E).
  • The Gobble letters can be used as wildcards or as part of a word.

Scoring:

  • Each word created during the game is worth points based on its length:
    • 3-letter words: 1 point
    • 4-letter words: 2 points
    • 5-letter words: 3 points
    • 6-letter words: 4 points
    • 7-letter words: 5 points
    • 8-letter words: 6 points
    • 9-letter words: 7 points
    • 10-letter words: 8 points
  • Bonus points are awarded for using all 7 letters in a player’s initial hand (10 points).
  • Penalty points are deducted for any unused letters in a player’s hand at the end of the game (-1 point per letter).

Strategies:

  • Focus on using up your high-scoring letters first to maximize your points.
  • Try to block your opponents’ word creation by playing letters that make it difficult for them to think of a word.
  • Use the Gobble letters strategically to create longer words or block your opponents’ words.
  • Pay attention to the letters that have been played to anticipate what words your opponents might create and plan your next move accordingly.

Variations:

  • To make the game more challenging, players can agree to use a time limit for each turn or to create words that use only certain parts of speech (e.g., nouns, verbs, adjectives).
  • To make the game easier, players can agree to allow words that use letters not in the original letter deck or to create words that use only common letter combinations.
